Project Title: Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences Child Research Participant Registry
Principal Investigator: Jodie Plumert, PhD
Research Team Contact: Carrie Whittaker at 319-335-2450
The purpose of this registry is to identify children to participate in research studies conducted by faculty and staff in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of Iowa. Your child is being invited to enroll in this Registry because your child lives in Johnson County or Linn County.
The Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences Research Participant Registry is a listing of information about children. If or when there is an appropriate study for your child based on the information in the Registry, you will be contacted by a Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences research assistant with information about the study either by letter or e-mail. The purpose of the contact will be to let you know about a study and to see if you are interested in having your child participate in the study. The number and type of study volunteers needed each year varies, so we cannot guarantee that your child will be contacted. There may be additional requirements for being in the study so we cannot guarantee that your child will be enrolled in a study. Participation in any study is voluntary, and submitting your child's name to the registry in no way obligates you to respond to any requests for study volunteers.
If you agree to your child's participation in the Registry, we would ask you to complete a form to provide information about your child including birth date, gender, and contact information (name and address of parent). We will also collect information about your child including whether or not your child has siblings, your child's exposure to languages in the home, and your child's health condition such as vision impairment (glasses), colorblindness, diagnoses of speech or hearing impairments or developmental disorders.
We will keep information you provide about your child confidential. However, federal government regulatory agencies, auditing departments of the University of Iowa, and the University of Iowa Institutional Review Board (a committee that reviews and approves research studies) may inspect and copy records pertaining to this research.
Only the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences faculty and staff who are listed above as investigators have access to the Registry. Registry information is kept in a password-protected database. We will keep your child's information in our Registry until your child turns 18 years old or you request the information to be taken out of the Registry. When your child turns 18, we will delete his or her record completely from the database. The information about your child you provide for us will only be used for the purpose of identifying children for studies in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences and contacting you for possible future research. Your contact information will not be sold or distributed to any outside party or institution.
You will not have any costs for being in this registry. You or your child will not be paid for being in this Registry.
There are no known risks from being in this Registry and you or your child will not benefit personally. However, we hope that others may benefit in the future from studies that may be conducted.
Taking part in this Registry is completely voluntary. If you decide not to permit your child to be in this Registry, or if you stop your child's participation at any time, you or your child won't be penalized or lose any benefits for which you otherwise qualify. If you do not wish to submit your child's information to the Registry, return the form without answering any of the questions. If at any time you would like to remove your child's name from this research participant registry, please call 319-335-2406 or email jodie-plumert@uiowa.edu.
If you have any questions about the Registry itself or to report any problems related to participation in the Registry, contact Dr. Jodie Plumert at 319-335-2405.
